4chan never chose a mascot. It just happened.

Because the site was called Yotsuba Channel, her face started appearing where things broke — on 404 pages, banned screens, missing threads. Yotsuba Koiwai wasn’t a symbol of order or guidance. She didn’t explain the error. She just smiled, like the internet didn’t owe you anything.

Over time, that smile became familiar. Not official, not designed — just repeated until everyone understood what it meant. This is where the page ends. This is where logic stops. This is 4chan. $YOTSUBA comes from that same place. Not as a promise or a plan, but as a recognition — of the internet before polish, before purpose, before everything needed to make sense.

It exists the way memes used to exist: accidentally, collectively, and without permission. If you were there, you know. If you weren’t, that’s fine too.

404 isn’t a mistake. It’s the point.
